Is the US ready to work with Columbian service providers?

Do you think that US Companies are ready to work in Columbia? Are there any deals anybody can point to?

I would have to say that it's more a question of whether a company is ready to simply outsource.  Outsourcing, when done right and approached from a sound business perspective can be very successful.  It has been my experience that when looking service providers, buyers need to follow some simple steps.

1.  High Level - Determine Service Region (farshore, nearshore, local)
2.  Establish core service provider capabilities
3.  Seek service providers and conduct fundamental viability & capability evaluation.

More indepth examinations will be conducted once the 'short list' of providers is established.

I believe that the US is ready to look at all nearshore providers, including Columbia.  Sometimes a professional outsourcing guide can help to facilititate (building buyer comfort, or provider visibility).

My concern is - Are the Columbian firms really ready to support US companies in Columbia and in the US.  My experience over the past year would indicate that they are not always ready and prepared.  Therefore, the US side in the outsourcing or contract needs to be careful and engage in a solid due diligence.

The first thing the US needs to do if it is going to work with Colombia is start spelling it right! Yes, there are two Os and no Us in the country's name, folks. Same for the nationality.

Now, that said, there is no question in my mind that Colombian professionals are amongst the bes prepared in the world, and extraordinarily pleasant to work with. The country itself is beautiful and has the advantage, amogst others of having both a good amount of English speakers and what is broadly considered the most neutral and pleasant Spanish accent.

Of course, American executives after hearing all the scary news for the last 20 years are understandably reluctant to travel there--and of course it is not the safest place in the world, but neither is Baltimore. The country's economic growth has been significant, and the environment for business is the best it has evern been--it made the cover of BusinessWeek recently as the world's best performing stock market. The current administration "gets" both free trade and the need to improve security.

Bottom, line, it is a destination worth considering as part of your Latin America strategy.
